Best Hotels Near Petco Park in San Diego

Some stadium trips force you to choose between staying close to the game and staying in the part of town where you actually want to spend the weekend.

San Diego doesn't.

Petco Park sits at the edge of the Gaslamp Quarter, just blocks from the waterfront and San Diego Convention Center. That puts restaurants, nightlife, hotels and the ballpark within an unusually compact section of downtown.

It's also more than a baseball destination. Petco Park hosts concerts and other major events, including a sold-out stadium concert earlier this month.

For most visitors, our strategy would be simple: stay downtown, walk to Petco Park and skip the game-day drive entirely.

Here are the hotels we'd check first.

Omni San Diego Hotel at the Ballpark: Best Hotel for Petco Park

Omni San Diego Hotel at the Ballpark is the obvious first choice if the game is the centerpiece of your trip.

The hotel is directly beside Petco Park and has something no other hotel in the country currently offers: a private pedestrian skybridge providing direct access into the ballpark for qualifying hotel guests.

Omni also completed a major renovation in 2024 that refreshed all 511 guestrooms along with the hotel's restaurants, pool area and other spaces.

You're simultaneously beside the stadium and in the Gaslamp Quarter, so the location remains useful after the final out.

Best for: Padres weekends, first-time visitors and travelers who want maximum ballpark convenience.

Pendry San Diego: Best Luxury Gaslamp Stay

For a more upscale weekend, we'd look at Pendry San Diego.

Pendry sits at Fifth Avenue and J Street in the Gaslamp Quarter. The hotel puts Petco Park just 0.2 miles away—about a four-minute walk—and the San Diego Convention Center 0.3 miles away.

That location gives you one of the best combinations of baseball and nightlife on this list.

You can walk to the game, return to the hotel afterward and still be in the middle of the Gaslamp rather than heading back to a quieter stadium district.

Best for: Couples, luxury trips and Gaslamp nightlife.

Hilton San Diego Bayfront: Best for Waterfront Views

Hilton San Diego Bayfront approaches Petco Park from the opposite direction.

The hotel sits directly on San Diego Bay beside the convention center and across the Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge from Petco Park and the Gaslamp Quarter. Hilton lists the ballpark just 0.3 miles away.

This is where we'd stay if we wanted the stadium to be convenient without sacrificing the waterfront side of San Diego.

The hotel is also only three miles from San Diego International Airport.

Best for: Families, waterfront stays and convention travelers.

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter: Best for Nightlife

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter puts you directly in San Diego's dining and entertainment district.

Marriott positions the hotel in the historic Gaslamp Quarter, with easy access to attractions including Petco Park, Seaport Village, Little Italy, Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo.

The location makes this a particularly good choice when you're traveling with friends and the itinerary extends beyond baseball.

One expense to factor into the room rate is parking: Marriott currently lists valet parking at $70 per day.

Best for: Groups, restaurants and nightlife.

Hard Rock Hotel San Diego: Best for a High-Energy Weekend

Hard Rock Hotel San Diego sits at the entrance to the Gaslamp Quarter directly across from the San Diego Convention Center.

Its location also puts you just blocks from Petco Park, making it another strong option for visitors who want the trip to feel like an event weekend rather than simply a place to sleep.

We'd consider it especially for groups, bachelor or bachelorette weekends, and travelers planning to spend time in the Gaslamp after the game.

Best for: Groups and nightlife-focused trips.

The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter: Best for Exploring Downtown

If you'd rather move a little farther away from the stadium, The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter gives you a more central downtown base.

The hotel has an outdoor pool and sits two miles from San Diego International Airport.

This wouldn't be our first pick for someone whose sole objective is minimizing the walk to Petco Park.

It makes more sense for a longer San Diego trip where baseball is one part of an itinerary that might also include Little Italy, the waterfront, Balboa Park and other downtown attractions.

Best for: Longer city trips and travelers exploring beyond the Gaslamp.

Should You Stay in the Gaslamp Quarter for a Padres Game?

For most visitors, yes.

The Gaslamp gives you a rare combination: you can stay within walking distance of the ballpark without spending the rest of the weekend surrounded by parking lots.

Omni says the neighborhood contains more than 200 restaurants and bars.

That means your Saturday can be as simple as breakfast downtown, exploring the waterfront during the day, dinner or drinks in the Gaslamp and walking into Petco Park for the game.

No parking strategy required.

Do You Need a Car for a Petco Park Weekend?

If you're flying into San Diego for a short downtown trip, we probably wouldn't rent one.

The Padres specifically recommend San Diego's public transit system as an alternative to driving. All three MTS Trolley lines provide service to Petco Park, while North County visitors can also use the COASTER.

Combine that with the walkability of the Gaslamp, convention center and waterfront and a car can become more expense than convenience.

Hotel parking reinforces the point. The San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter currently charges $70 per day for valet parking.

If your plans extend to beaches, La Jolla or attractions farther outside downtown, the calculation changes. But for a two-night baseball trip, downtown works extremely well without a rental car.

How Far Is San Diego Airport From Petco Park?

Very close by major-city standards.

Hilton San Diego Bayfront lists San Diego International Airport three miles away, while Pendry puts it about four miles away and estimates roughly 12 minutes by car under normal conditions.

That makes San Diego particularly appealing for a quick fly-in baseball weekend.

You can land Friday afternoon and be downtown without spending an hour crossing a sprawling metro area.

What Else Can You Do Near Petco Park?

This is where the location really pays off.

The San Diego Convention Center and waterfront sit nearby, while the Gaslamp Quarter provides the easiest concentration of restaurants and nightlife.

From downtown, it's also straightforward to extend the trip toward Seaport Village, Little Italy or Balboa Park.

Families have even more reason to stay an extra day. Hilton notes that the San Diego Zoo is approximately three miles from its Bayfront hotel.

In other words, this doesn't need to be a fly-in, watch-nine-innings, fly-home trip.

When Should You Book a Hotel Near Petco Park?

For ordinary regular-season games, you'll usually have more flexibility than you would for a major football event.

But weekend series, concerts, conventions and playoff-caliber baseball can change the equation quickly because the Gaslamp's hotels serve several different types of travelers at once.

For future trips, we'd reserve a refundable room once the game dates are firm rather than waiting for the closest hotels to fill.

For a trip centered completely around Petco Park, Omni San Diego Hotel at the Ballpark is our clear first choice. The direct skybridge is difficult to compete with.

For an upscale couples weekend, choose Pendry San Diego.

For families or anyone who'd rather wake up beside San Diego Bay, Hilton San Diego Bayfront offers an excellent alternative.

And if restaurants and nightlife are as important as baseball, staying anywhere in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter makes the entire weekend remarkably easy.

Petco Park is the reason to book the trip.

Downtown San Diego is the reason we'd stay another night.
