Best Hotels Near Notre Dame Stadium for a Football Weekend in South Bend

A Notre Dame football weekend is one trip where we’d pay extra to stay close to campus.

The game itself may be the reason you’re heading to South Bend, but Notre Dame Stadium is only part of the experience. Walking the university grounds, seeing the Golden Dome, visiting the Grotto and spending a Saturday surrounded by one of college football’s most recognizable campuses are all part of the trip.

That’s why hotel location matters.

Stay close enough to campus and you can spend much of the weekend on foot rather than worrying about parking and game-day traffic.

Here are the hotels we’d check first.

Morris Inn: Best Overall Hotel Near Notre Dame Stadium

For the quintessential Notre Dame experience, Morris Inn is our first choice.

The hotel is located directly on the University of Notre Dame campus, making it one of the most convenient places to stay for a football weekend.

Notre Dame Stadium is only a short walk away, and attractions including the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and Grotto are even closer.

That’s an almost perfect setup for a first visit.

Friday evening can be spent exploring campus after many daytime visitors have left. On Saturday morning, there’s no need to drive toward the university or figure out where to park.

You walk out of the hotel and you’re already there.

Best for: First-time Notre Dame visitors, alumni and bucket-list football trips.

Embassy Suites South Bend at Notre Dame: Best for Families and Groups

Embassy Suites is one of the strongest alternatives to staying directly on campus.

The hotel is beside Eddy Street Commons and across from the university, putting Notre Dame Stadium within an easy walk.

The suite-style rooms make it particularly appealing for families and groups, while complimentary breakfast is useful when everyone is trying to get moving on game-day morning.

Eddy Street Commons also gives you restaurants and other businesses immediately outside the hotel.

You get many of the benefits of staying on campus while having more dining options directly around your hotel.

Best for: Families, groups and travelers who want a walkable hotel with additional space.

Fairfield Inn & Suites South Bend at Notre Dame: Best Straightforward Walkable Option

Fairfield Inn & Suites is another hotel we’d check before expanding the search farther from campus.

Its location near Eddy Street Commons puts the university and Notre Dame Stadium within walking distance.

This isn’t necessarily about choosing the most elaborate hotel in South Bend.

It’s about getting the location right.

Being able to wake up, grab breakfast and walk toward campus can be much more valuable on a football weekend than staying at a nicer property several miles away.

Best for: Couples, families and football travelers prioritizing location.

Ivy Court Inn & Suites: Best Independent Option Near Campus

Ivy Court Inn & Suites gives travelers another option close to Notre Dame.

Its location near campus keeps the stadium within a reasonable walk for many visitors while offering an alternative to the major hotel chains surrounding the university.

We’d especially consider Ivy Court when the hotels immediately around Eddy Street Commons become expensive or sell out.

On a major football weekend, moving the search only slightly farther from the heart of campus can sometimes uncover better availability without giving up the ability to walk.

Best for: Travelers looking for a smaller property close to Notre Dame.

The Inn at Saint Mary’s: Best for a Quieter Stay

The Inn at Saint Mary’s is north of Notre Dame’s campus and provides another useful option for football weekends.

You’re farther from Notre Dame Stadium than you would be at Morris Inn or the Eddy Street hotels, but you’re still firmly in the university area.

We’d look here if we wanted a somewhat quieter home base while remaining close to campus.

It’s also worth comparing with other hotels around the Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame area when the most walkable properties are unavailable.

Best for: Couples and visitors who want to stay near campus without being directly in the busiest game-day zone.

Should You Stay Near Notre Dame or Downtown South Bend?

For a first Notre Dame football trip, we’d stay near campus.

This is different from some NFL destinations where the downtown entertainment district might be the main attraction before and after the game.

At Notre Dame, the university itself is a major part of the destination.

Staying nearby lets you experience campus more naturally instead of treating it as somewhere you drive into Saturday morning.

Downtown South Bend can still make sense, particularly when campus hotels are sold out or rates become extremely high.

But given the choice, we’d pay more for walkability.

Can You Walk to Notre Dame Stadium From Your Hotel?

If you choose one of the hotels around campus or Eddy Street Commons, absolutely.

That’s one of the biggest reasons we’d concentrate the hotel search in this area.

Morris Inn is directly on campus, while Embassy Suites, Fairfield Inn and other nearby properties make it realistic to walk to Notre Dame Stadium rather than drive.

That becomes even more valuable after the game.

Instead of immediately joining thousands of vehicles leaving the university, you can walk back toward the hotel while the traffic clears.

Bring comfortable shoes.

You’ll probably be doing plenty of walking around campus even before kickoff.

What Should You Do Before a Notre Dame Football Game?

Don’t arrive at the stadium an hour before kickoff.

Notre Dame is a place worth experiencing slowly.

Visit the Grotto.

See the Golden Dome.

Walk past the Basilica.

Explore the historic heart of campus and watch the atmosphere change as kickoff approaches.

If you’re arriving Friday, we’d spend some time on campus that evening and then return Saturday morning.

Football weekends include traditions and activities well before the stadium gates become the center of attention.

Think of kickoff as the centerpiece of the weekend—not the beginning of it.

What Should You Know About Parking at Notre Dame Stadium?

If your hotel is close enough to walk, we’d leave the car there.

That’s one of the main reasons to pay for a campus-area hotel.

For visitors staying farther away, Notre Dame offers a combination of advance-purchase and game-day parking options around campus.

Parking procedures and lot availability can vary by season and game, so we’d always check Notre Dame’s current game-day information before traveling.

Whatever you choose, make the parking decision before Saturday morning.

Trying to improvise around a packed college campus is rarely the best way to start a football trip.

Can You Visit the Grotto and Basilica on a Football Weekend?

Yes, and we’d consider both essential parts of a first Notre Dame trip.

The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is one of the most peaceful and recognizable places on campus, while the Basilica of the Sacred Heart is another landmark worth visiting regardless of your religious background.

Both are easily incorporated into a campus walk.

That’s another advantage of staying nearby.

Instead of trying to cram the landmarks into a rushed pregame itinerary, you can see them Friday evening, Saturday morning or even Sunday before leaving South Bend.

How Early Should You Book a Hotel Near Notre Dame Stadium?

For a major home game, we’d book as soon as the trip is reasonably certain.

South Bend has plenty of lodging options, but the inventory changes dramatically when you limit the search to hotels that are genuinely walkable to Notre Dame Stadium.

That’s the important distinction.

You can usually expand the radius and find somewhere to sleep.

You can’t recreate the convenience of staying on or immediately beside campus once those rooms are gone.

For rivalry games and other marquee weekends, we’d prioritize a refundable reservation early rather than waiting for prices to improve.

Should You Fly Into South Bend or Chicago?

South Bend International Airport is the easiest option when the flight schedule and price make sense.

It’s close enough to the university that you can reach your hotel quickly and begin the weekend without adding a lengthy drive.

Chicago gives travelers significantly more flight options, however, and can sometimes be cheaper.

The tradeoff is ground transportation.

For a short football weekend, we’d put a premium on flying directly into South Bend.

For a longer trip that also includes Chicago, flying into one of Chicago’s airports becomes much more attractive.

How Many Nights Should You Stay for a Notre Dame Game?

We’d aim for at least two nights.

Arrive Friday and you’ll have time to explore campus without rushing.

Saturday becomes entirely about the football experience.

Then Sunday morning gives you another chance to see campus when it’s much quieter before heading home.

If you’re traveling a long distance or combining Notre Dame with Chicago, three nights can make the trip considerably more relaxed.

What Else Should You Do in South Bend?

Don’t assume the stadium is the only reason to explore the area.

Downtown South Bend has restaurants, breweries and attractions that can fill out Friday evening or Sunday morning.

But on a first visit, we’d still devote most of our free time to Notre Dame itself.

The university campus is one of the reasons this trip feels different from visiting a typical football stadium.

You aren’t simply traveling to a venue.

You’re traveling to a place with generations of football history wrapped into the campus around it.

For a first Notre Dame football weekend, Morris Inn is our top choice.

Staying directly on campus changes the trip. You’re close to Notre Dame Stadium, the Basilica, the Grotto and everything else that makes the university worth exploring.

Embassy Suites South Bend at Notre Dame is an excellent alternative, particularly for families and groups.

Fairfield Inn & Suites South Bend at Notre Dame and Ivy Court Inn & Suites provide additional nearby options, while The Inn at Saint Mary’s is worth considering when you want to remain close to the university without being directly in the busiest part of campus.

Whichever hotel you choose, don’t treat Notre Dame like a trip where the stadium is the only attraction.

Arrive Friday.

Walk campus.

Visit the Grotto.

See the Golden Dome.

Give yourself most of Saturday.

And when it’s finally time for football, walk toward Notre Dame Stadium instead of spending the afternoon trying to reach it.
