Best Hotels Near Neyland Stadium for a Tennessee Football Weekend

Few college football settings make hotel location matter quite like Knoxville.

Neyland Stadium sits along the Tennessee River at the edge of the University of Tennessee campus, while downtown Knoxville and its restaurants, bars and Market Square are close enough that you can build an entire weekend around walking rather than driving.

That matters even more in 2026. Tennessee introduced new game-day traffic patterns this season, and the university specifically recommends that fans without parking passes avoid the campus corridor, remain downtown or use KAT shuttle options.

Our strategy would be simple: book somewhere near campus or downtown and leave the car parked on Saturday.

Here are the hotels we’d check first.

Graduate by Hilton Knoxville: Best Overall for a Tennessee Football Weekend

Graduate Knoxville is our first choice for a football-focused trip.

The hotel sits on Cumberland Avenue immediately beside the University of Tennessee campus and is just 0.5 mile from Neyland Stadium. Downtown is approximately 1.2 miles away.

That location puts you directly in the middle of the college atmosphere.

Graduate also leans heavily into Tennessee traditions and university history throughout the hotel, so it feels connected to the destination rather than like a generic chain property.

For a first trip to Neyland, we’d gladly pay a little more for the ability to walk out of the hotel and already be on Rocky Top.

Best for: First-time Tennessee visitors, couples and football-first weekends.

Cumberland House Knoxville: Best for Combining Downtown and the Stadium

Cumberland House gives you perhaps the best compromise between campus and downtown.

The hotel overlooks World’s Fair Park and the Knoxville Convention Center, while Hilton lists Neyland Stadium at less than half a mile away. Market Square, the Sunsphere and the University of Tennessee are also nearby.

That makes the property especially attractive for a two- or three-night trip.

You can explore downtown Friday evening, walk to the game Saturday and return toward World’s Fair Park afterward without joining the mass of cars leaving campus.

Best for: Couples and travelers who want both downtown Knoxville and football.

Residence Inn Knoxville Downtown: Best for Families and Longer Stays

Residence Inn Knoxville Downtown is a strong option when the trip involves more than two people or you’re staying several nights.

The all-suite property is in downtown Knoxville, and Marriott specifically highlights its location near Neyland Stadium. The hotel also has a second-floor outdoor terrace.

For us, the appeal is being able to treat downtown as the home base.

You’re positioned around restaurants and entertainment Friday and Saturday night while still remaining close enough to make walking toward campus realistic for many travelers.

Best for: Families, groups and multi-night stays.

Courtyard Knoxville Downtown: Best Traditional Downtown Option

Courtyard Knoxville Downtown is another useful central choice.

The property is downtown near the University of Tennessee, Market Square, Tennessee Theatre and other central Knoxville attractions. Marriott also positions the hotel near Neyland Stadium and UT.

This is the type of hotel we’d choose if we want a conventional, predictable stay without sacrificing the downtown location.

You won’t have quite the same campus immersion as Graduate Knoxville, but Friday evening and postgame downtown plans become easier.

Best for: Couples, Marriott loyalists and downtown-focused weekends.

Crowne Plaza Knoxville Downtown University: Best for Market Square and Downtown

Crowne Plaza is farther from Neyland than the closest campus hotels, but its downtown position makes it worth considering.

IHG lists the hotel approximately one mile from both the University of Tennessee campus and Neyland Stadium.

We’d consider this particularly for a three-night weekend where football is the centerpiece but not the only activity.

You’re positioned to enjoy downtown Knoxville before and after game day, and the 2026 traffic guidance makes staying downtown more attractive than trying to drive onto campus without reserved parking.

Best for: Travelers prioritizing downtown restaurants and nightlife.

Should You Stay Near Campus or Downtown Knoxville?

For a first Tennessee football game, we’d lean toward campus if you can find a reasonable rate.

Graduate Knoxville puts you only half a mile from Neyland Stadium. Cumberland House provides almost the same stadium convenience while shifting you closer to World’s Fair Park and downtown.

Downtown becomes especially appealing if you’re staying the entire weekend.

Market Square, Gay Street and the Old City give you plenty to do Friday evening and after the game, while the stadium is still close enough that you don’t need to structure Saturday around a long drive.

The important thing is avoiding a hotel that saves a little money but turns game day into a transportation project.

What Should You Know About Neyland Stadium Traffic in 2026?

Don’t rely on how Knoxville traffic worked in previous seasons.

Tennessee rolled out new traffic patterns for major events at Neyland Stadium this year.

Fans with designated parking passes are being directed onto specific recommended routes. Fans without parking passes are advised to avoid the campus corridor, stay in the downtown area or use KAT shuttle options.

Postgame routes can also send drivers in directions that differ from normal everyday traffic in an effort to move vehicles away from campus faster.

For an out-of-town visitor, that makes a walkable hotel even more valuable.

What Should You Do Before a Tennessee Football Game?

Give yourself most of Saturday.

Neyland is one of the rare stadiums where the setting itself is part of the attraction.

The stadium sits directly beside the Tennessee River, creating the famous Vol Navy tradition as fans arrive by boat. From there, game day spreads across the University of Tennessee campus.

Our preference would be to start downtown or near Cumberland Avenue, walk through campus and soak up the atmosphere rather than treating the stadium as somewhere you simply enter at kickoff.

If you’re staying within a mile, there is very little reason to spend the morning sitting in traffic.

Which Tennessee Home Game Should You Travel For in 2026?

You have several excellent choices remaining.

Tennessee hosts Auburn this Saturday, October 3, at 3:30 p.m. ET in Neyland Stadium. It’s Auburn’s first trip to Knoxville since 2013.

Then comes the biggest remaining October weekend:

Alabama visits Knoxville on October 17. The exact kickoff remains in the afternoon-or-night flex window.

Tennessee later hosts Kentucky for Homecoming on November 7 and LSU on November 21.

If we were picking one trip, Alabama would be the obvious choice.

Tennessee enters the weekend with an active streak of 27 consecutive home sellouts, and the Alabama rivalry gives you the full version of a Knoxville football Saturday.

How Early Should You Book a Hotel Near Neyland Stadium?

Immediately after deciding which game you want.

Tennessee has sold out season tickets for four consecutive seasons, and the program averaged 101,915 fans per home game in 2025.

That’s a lot of demand entering a relatively concentrated hotel market around campus and downtown.

For Alabama or LSU weekends in particular, we’d rather book a refundable room early than wait for rates to improve.

The hotels within roughly half a mile of Neyland are selling something much more valuable than a bed on these weekends:

They’re selling the ability to ignore game-day traffic.

Do You Need a Car for a Knoxville Football Weekend?

You’ll probably need transportation to reach Knoxville, but once you’re checked into the right hotel, you may barely need a car.

McGhee Tyson Airport is approximately 12 miles from Graduate Knoxville.

After reaching campus or downtown, much of the weekend can happen on foot.

That’s the itinerary we’d want: arrive Friday, park or rideshare to the hotel, walk around downtown that evening, spend Saturday on foot around campus and retrieve the car when it’s time to leave Sunday.

For the purest Tennessee football weekend, Graduate by Hilton Knoxville is our first choice.

At about half a mile from Neyland Stadium and immediately beside campus, its location is almost perfect for a first visit.

Cumberland House Knoxville might be even better if you want to split the difference between the stadium and downtown.

Families and groups should compare Residence Inn Knoxville Downtown, while Courtyard Knoxville Downtown and Crowne Plaza Knoxville Downtown University give you additional central options.

But whatever hotel you choose, we’d prioritize walkability over almost everything else.

Spend Friday downtown.

Walk campus Saturday.

See the Tennessee River beside Neyland.

Experience the Vol Navy.

And when 100,000-plus fans begin leaving the stadium, enjoy walking back to your hotel instead of searching for your car.
