Best Hotels Near Michigan Stadium for a Michigan Football Weekend
Ann Arbor is one of those college football destinations where we’d rather stay downtown than chase the absolute shortest distance to the stadium.
Michigan Stadium sits south of the University of Michigan’s central campus, while downtown Ann Arbor is packed with restaurants, bars and the college-town atmosphere that makes the trip worth stretching beyond Saturday afternoon. The Big House is close enough that a downtown stay can still work extremely well—especially if you’re willing to walk or use Ann Arbor’s football shuttle.
That gives visitors a pretty appealing formula: stay downtown, spend Friday night exploring Ann Arbor and make your way through campus toward Michigan Stadium on game day.
Here are the hotels we’d check first.
Graduate by Hilton Ann Arbor: Best Overall for a Michigan Football Weekend
Graduate Ann Arbor is our favorite all-around option for a first Michigan football trip.
The hotel sits in the heart of downtown directly across from the University of Michigan campus. Michigan Stadium is approximately 1.4 miles away, while Kerrytown is about 0.4 mile from the property.
That location gives you much more than stadium proximity.
Friday night, you’re already downtown. Saturday morning, you can walk through campus as you head south toward the Big House. After the game, you’re returning to one of the best areas in Ann Arbor for food and drinks.
The hotel itself also incorporates Ann Arbor and university-inspired design, which fits a football weekend particularly well.
Best for: First-time Michigan visitors, couples and travelers who want the full college-town experience.
Bell Tower Hotel: Best for Staying on Central Campus
Bell Tower Hotel is another property we’d check immediately.
It’s located at 300 South Thayer Street on the University of Michigan’s central campus, right in downtown Ann Arbor. The hotel describes itself as steps from shops, museums, theaters and university activities.
Complimentary full American breakfast is included, and valet parking is available.
For a football trip, the real advantage is being embedded in campus rather than staying beside an interstate.
You can explore the Diag and central campus Friday or Saturday morning, then make the walk toward Michigan Stadium as the crowds build.
One booking detail is worth knowing: Bell Tower treats football weekends as special events, with stricter deposit and cancellation terms than ordinary stays.
Best for: Couples, alumni and visitors prioritizing campus atmosphere.
Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown: Best for Families and Longer Stays
Residence Inn is our pick for travelers who want a downtown base with suite-style accommodations.
The hotel is at 120 West Huron Street in downtown Ann Arbor, with shopping and dining nearby. Marriott specifically markets the property for Michigan Stadium visits, and amenities include an indoor pool.
For a family or group staying Friday through Sunday—or even Thursday through Monday—the additional space of a Residence Inn setup can be more useful than squeezing everyone into a standard room.
You’re also positioned to enjoy Ann Arbor outside game day rather than making every trip revolve around the car.
Best for: Families, groups and multi-night stays.
Hilton Garden Inn Ann Arbor: Best for Road-Trippers
Hilton Garden Inn makes more sense if downtown walkability matters less than easy parking and highway access.
The hotel is near Briarwood Mall and I-94. Hilton lists Michigan Stadium approximately two miles away, along with downtown Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan’s central campus. Free parking and an indoor pool are included.
We’d especially consider this for a family driving into Ann Arbor.
You sacrifice the ability to walk out of the hotel directly into the downtown atmosphere, but you gain a more straightforward car-oriented setup.
Best for: Families, road-trippers and visitors prioritizing free parking.
Holiday Inn & Suites Ann Arbor Univ. Michigan Area: Best Practical Alternative
Holiday Inn & Suites is another useful option when central Ann Arbor hotels are either sold out or prohibitively expensive.
The hotel is approximately two miles from Michigan Stadium and 2.5 miles from downtown and the University of Michigan campus. It also has on-site parking, an indoor heated pool and an on-site restaurant.
This wouldn’t be our first choice for a bucket-list Michigan weekend.
But major college football games can send downtown hotel rates soaring, and having a dependable option within a few miles of the Big House can be a smart compromise.
Best for: Road-trippers and travelers looking for value outside downtown.
Should You Stay Downtown Ann Arbor or Near Michigan Stadium?
For a first visit, we’d choose downtown.
Michigan Stadium is obviously the centerpiece of Saturday, but Ann Arbor itself is a major reason Michigan works so well as a football destination.
Staying downtown puts restaurants, bars and the University of Michigan’s central campus outside your door.
Graduate Ann Arbor, for example, is roughly 1.4 miles from Michigan Stadium while sitting directly across from campus.
That’s a very manageable distance for many football fans, particularly when the walk itself becomes part of game day.
If you don’t want to walk, Ann Arbor also has a dedicated football transportation option.
How Does the Ann Arbor Football Shuttle Work?
TheRide operates FootballRide for every University of Michigan home football game.
For the 2026 season, shuttles operate from several areas around Ann Arbor, including downtown, hotels and parking sites. Service runs approximately every 20 minutes beginning two hours before kickoff, with the final pregame buses leaving 30 minutes before kickoff.
The fare is currently $1.50 each way, and contactless mobile ticketing is available.
Buses drop passengers near Gate 2 beside Crisler Center.
After the game, return shuttles operate for approximately one hour.
For an out-of-town visitor staying downtown, that’s one of the easiest ways to avoid building the entire weekend around stadium parking.
Can You Walk From Downtown Ann Arbor to Michigan Stadium?
Yes.
Whether you want to depends on your hotel, the weather and how much walking you’re comfortable doing.
From parts of downtown and central campus, expect roughly a 1.5-mile walk to the stadium.
We actually like that strategy.
You’re moving through the University of Michigan campus and joining progressively larger groups of fans heading toward the Big House.
Wear comfortable shoes and leave early enough that the walk feels like part of the experience rather than a race to kickoff.
For the return trip, you can either walk back downtown or use FootballRide.
What Should You Know About Michigan Stadium Parking?
Don’t improvise it Saturday morning.
Michigan’s official football parking includes a mix of permit-only areas and game-day lots around the stadium.
For the 2026 season, game-day options include the University of Michigan Golf Course, Ann Arbor Golf & Outing, Pioneer High School, the Maize Lot and several university parking structures. Prices and opening times vary by lot.
There are also important traffic changes around the stadium.
New for 2026, portions of East Hoover Street and Greene Street close 90 minutes before kickoff because of increased pedestrian traffic and the Michigan Marching Band’s route to the stadium. Additional roads around Michigan Stadium are closed to create a vehicle-free zone during games.
If you’re staying downtown, we’d strongly consider walking or using FootballRide instead.
What Should You Do Before a Michigan Football Game?
Give Ann Arbor most of the day.
Walk around central campus.
See the Diag.
Spend time downtown.
Then gradually head south toward the stadium as kickoff approaches.
The tailgating areas around Michigan Stadium—particularly around the golf course and Pioneer High School—are a major part of the atmosphere.
And then there’s simply the experience of approaching the Big House.
Michigan Stadium is one of those venues whose scale is difficult to appreciate until tens of thousands of people are moving toward it at once.
Don’t make the mistake of arriving just in time to find your seat.
How Early Should You Book a Hotel for a Michigan Game?
For a major opponent, we’d book as soon as the trip becomes realistic.
The problem isn’t finding a hotel somewhere in the Ann Arbor area.
It’s finding one that gives you the weekend you actually want.
Graduate Ann Arbor and Bell Tower Hotel put you directly in the downtown-campus environment. Once central rooms disappear, you’ll increasingly trade atmosphere and walkability for availability.
Football-weekend policies can also be stricter than ordinary hotel stays. Bell Tower, for example, requires special-event deposits and applies a different cancellation policy for football weekends.
Check those terms carefully before booking.
Which Michigan Games Make the Best Football Trips?
Some opponents naturally create bigger travel weekends than others.
Rivalry games against Michigan State and Ohio State are obvious bucket-list choices, while marquee Big Ten opponents can turn Ann Arbor into one of the biggest college football destinations of the season.
Homecoming is another excellent weekend for first-time visitors because the campus atmosphere extends well beyond the stadium.
If you’re flexible, less prominent opponents can provide a useful alternative.
You still get Michigan Stadium, the marching band, campus and downtown Ann Arbor—often with somewhat less pressure on hotel availability.
How Many Nights Should You Stay in Ann Arbor?
We’d recommend at least two.
Arrive Friday and you’ll have time to experience downtown Ann Arbor without rushing into town Saturday morning.
Make Saturday entirely about Michigan football.
Then Sunday morning gives you a chance for breakfast and another walk around town before leaving.
For a night game, we’d be even more inclined to stay through Sunday rather than attempting a long drive immediately afterward.
Do You Need a Car for an Ann Arbor Football Weekend?
Not necessarily once you’re in town.
Graduate Ann Arbor and Bell Tower Hotel both put you downtown beside the University of Michigan campus. From there, restaurants, shops and campus attractions are walkable, while Michigan Stadium can be reached on foot or via FootballRide.
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is approximately 26 miles from Graduate Ann Arbor, so travelers flying in will still need ground transportation to reach Ann Arbor.
Once you’ve checked into a central hotel, however, we’d be perfectly happy leaving the car parked.
For the best overall Michigan football weekend, Graduate by Hilton Ann Arbor is our first choice.
Its downtown location directly across from campus puts you in the middle of Ann Arbor while keeping Michigan Stadium roughly 1.4 miles away.
Bell Tower Hotel is an excellent alternative if you want to stay directly on central campus.
Families and groups should compare Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, while Hilton Garden Inn Ann Arbor and Holiday Inn & Suites Ann Arbor Univ. Michigan Area are practical choices for travelers who value parking and easier highway access.
But the bigger strategy is what we’d remember:
Stay downtown if you can.
Arrive Friday.
Walk Ann Arbor.
Spend Saturday around campus.
Then walk or take the shuttle to the Big House.
A Michigan football trip is better when the stadium feels like the climax of the weekend—not the only part of it.
